Think about a guitar.  The strings on their own are capable of creating sound, but only those near it would ever hear the sound.  Behind the strings there is an opening leading to a dark, hollow space.  When the instrument creates sound, it resonates in the space and is projected out into the world, far louder, and far stronger than before.
